Week 8 (11-7 11-9 and 11-12)

Goals 11/7/2011

  • Put together as much of the display boards as possible -- so we know where the holes are.
  • Put together as much of the models as possible.
  • For those who would like to try explaining their info (or just building with LEGO's!) at Glenaire on the 9th, it would be good practice -- and it would be very cool to have tshirts by then and something to show (This is a "like to have," not a "have to have.") I know Jeremy and Gray? will be at Glenaire with their older siblings so they can show some of what they have.
  • The following Monday, we'll find tune everything and talk about Saturday -- what's involved, practice talking through their discussion, etc.

LEGO Heroes:
DESIGN
Build a minifig, take a nice clear photo of it and send it to me. I'll put them together and take out the background.

RESEARCH
Research popsicles and be ready to share (2 to 4 min/person -- parent back up help is fine) next week
Even better if they can bring some photos or print outs to put on the display board about their topic! (Maps or drawings or pictures -- remember that we'll have 6 students' work on the display board but it would be good for them to move actual pictures or drawings around next week and see where they would put them)

RESEARCH TOPICS
  • Arianna -- sugar
  • Levi -- popsicle sticks and packaging
  • Gray -- "the process" of how popsicles are made
  • Matthew (and Anna Grace?) -- a fruit or some type of flavoring for popsicles
  • Emily ?? the history of popsicles

MODEL
Might be worth talking about this with the kids before they meet again -- a reminder of what they're doing as a team and maybe how they could organize all the components so it would fit on the square.
  • Right now we have a refrigerated unit for the ingredients and storage
  • A motorized package "shooter"
  • A conveyor belt that carries the popsicles down the ramp
  • An overhead conveyor for holding the popsicles

LEGO Thunder Dudes:
Model: Talk with each kid about ice cream and what part of the process they would make that would go with everyone else's.

Research:
Do some research and pictures of some component to share (maps of where things are made, pictures of processes, etc.) -- bring some for the display board for next week.
  • Sprinkles: Canaan
  • Sugar: Ryan
  • Milk: Jeremy
  • Ethan: Vanilla

If anyone wants to do a bit more, might be interesting to have some history (from a brief look, ice cream was first started in Roman times), and some processes -- pictures of packaging, etc.

11/9 (Wednesday):

Glenaire Retirement Center: For those who would like to come and bring their presentations -- good practice to tell people about their research and hang around with the older FLL/FRC students
